This endemic mammal is small, about the size of a house mouse, with
long uniformly dark tail at least 125 % of the head-body length, and thinly
tufted with hairs at the tip. Coat dark reddish brown with numerous stiff
spines, especially at the hind part; belly much paler than back or sometimes
whitish.
